A Day to Rest

Today's weather was wonderful so it was lovely walking to school. I am now assigned to a homeroom kinda class in the mornings. They probably call it something different. But it's a class full of year nine and it's all boys. Today they were intensely discussing Italy's win in Euro 2012. So I stood there. I have decided I need to start getting there later. Or ask what the teachers do or go between classes. The teacher came in and took the attendance, which they call registrar. So then she tells me that I will be doing this without her next week. I'm sorry, what? So yeah. They will be mine for a few days.

I suppose I will continue my same format for each day until I can think of a new system to mix things up.

Period One:
My first class of the day was to observe a year ten english exam. It was different than our exams and I'm quite glad SCPS did not have these kind of exams. The students were told to read an article on a case in the US in which the death penalty was in question. Afterwards they debated the death penalty. The students were then graded on their debate skills and how much they contributed. I don't think I could do that. However, it was interesting hearing their opinions on the death penalty and the government system in America. Once again, I heard that Americans were gun crazy. One child also said that Americans discriminate more in regards to race while Britain discriminates more so based on gender. I thought that was an interesting thought. There was also an American child in the class, so it was nice to meet him. Though he was young so had a bit of a British accent, the lucky duck.

Period Two:
I was scheduled to go back to year six, so here come the familiar faces of yesterday. Including Tom Riddle. They also were taking an exam so they were exceptionally well behaved and I sat and read my Kindle.

Period Three:
I was meant to be in a year six english class but somehow ended up in an ICT class. Basically the same class I was in yesterday, simply with the other half of the year sixes. So once again we had a sub, but this man knew what he was doing. He gave them their lesson and kept them quiet even after they had finished. It was great. So once again, I read my Kindle. It was a bit of a slow day, but it's what I needed after yesterday's madness.

Period Four:
At lunch I learned I will have the homeroom to myself tomorrow in addition to next week. Thankfully I have taken up the habit of watching football so I can try to talk to them about that. England won! For this period I was in the library with a class that, from what I gathered, is for children who have some learning issues, such as dyslexia, etc and need more help in their studies. My favorite was in there. He's still precious as ever. I sat and listened as the teacher discussed their next assignment. They will be writing memoirs. They were all very well behaved children and we ended up having some of class in the courtyard.

Period Five:
My final period I was with year eight in english. The teacher was so nice and utilized me. The class got into groups and had to take the Shakespeare play they were reading and translate it into a modern setting. They were to use either set design, costumes, or script. Well, this is right up my ally, so I was excited to help out. I walked around the three groups and checked up on how their project was going and then helped them to expand on their ideas. I really loved this because I was applying things I had learned in my theater classes. I was able to take their great imaginative ideas and bring them back to the actual text. I also met another student from America.

A few interesting notes:
Because I am working in a school, the teachers assume I want to be a teacher. When I tell them I want to be a counselor, they look at me so weird. I have to explain that in American we have counselors in our schools. It's so weird. I feel like schools can really benefit from having a person there to help students get through some issues that may be affecting the classroom.

These kids cuss a lot and have a very colorful vocabulary, even the 11 year olds. And they give each other the finger a lot.

I also saw the nice teacher I met yesterday and we talked. She's just so sweet.

Tomorrow begins another schedule. Goodness.
